Dialah pelaku transeksual pertama yang maju dalam pemilihan legislatif di Michigan. Awalnya, Melissa kader adalah Partai Republik. Namun, pada Pemilu 2003, ia mengaku sebagai kader Partai Demokrat.
Sementara itu, pemilihan wali kota di Idaho menganut sistem nonpartisan. Artinya para kandidat tidak harus berasal dari partai politik.
Melissa pernah tampil di National Enquirer pada 2003. Ia juga menjadi tamu dalam acara Oprah Winfrey bersama saudara kembar dan mantan istrinya, Linda, pada 2005. Melissa dan Linda kini masih tinggal serumah. Bahkan Linda menjadi bendahara dalam tim kampanye Melissa. “Orang-orang akan mengatakan saya belum cukup lama di sini. Namun, jika Anda memilih saya sebagai wali kota, saya akan mengelola kota ini,” kata Melissa seperti dilansir Associated Press, Minggu (6/9).
Melissa optimistis dalam pemilihan di Idaho karena yakin kota itu tidak akan menjadikan status transeksual sebagai bahan kampanye hitam. Setidaknya, ia berharap kenangan buruk selama maju dalam Pemilihan Wali Kota Lansing pada 2003 tidak terulang. Saat itu, sebuah kelompok keagamaan berpawai dengan spanduk bertuliskan: “Homoseksual adalah dosa” dan “Hancurkan transeksual.”
Tidak sekali itu saja Melissa dilecehkan. Belakangan, Melissa mengancam menggugat situs jejaring sosial Twitter karena memasang akun palsu atas nama dirinya dengan titel: Wanita dengan sebuah penis”. Akun itu telah ditutup.
Melissa berjanji, jika terpilih, maka ia akan menciptakan transparansi termasuk mengadakan rapat di balai kota dengan ditayangkan di televisi. Dia juga berjanji memberikan keringanan pajak bagi pengusaha kecil dan mendongkrak jumlah lapangan pekerjaan.
